As Apartment Therapy’s Home Projects Editor, Sarah Everett is no stranger to a DIY. And when it’s time to decorate for the holidays, that means crafting festive touches that suit her subtle style.
“I like pine garlands and pops of red — I’m a big believer in unexpected red theory!” Sarah says. “My holiday decor is festive with some sparkle, but not over-the-top: something that matches my other home decor, not totally replaces it.”

This year, that includes a DIY swag wreath to adorn the workspace of her Brooklyn apartment. A swag wreath consists of a simple bundle of branches rather than a shaped form, giving a classic antique style moment. And when you hang them with Command™ Brand Hooks, they’re also simple to take down without harming your walls or paint! Command™ Brand Products feature a damage-free adhesive that gives you a strong hold when you need it and a clean break when you’re done. Here’s how Sarah made her swag wreath.

Materials
- Command™ Large Brushed Nickel Hook
- 1/4″ or 1/2″-width thin velvet ribbon
- Various small bells and/or ornaments (with top loops)
- Evergreen bundles
- Scissors
- Floral shears
- Floral wire (we recommend 24-gauge wire for this project)
- Pencil

How to Make a Swag Wreath
- Use floral shears to cut your evergreen bundles into varying lengths and fullness.
- Wrap floral wire around the top of the bundle to secure it together. Make sure the top of the bundle that’s past the floral wire is long and full enough to hide where you’re going to hang it from.
- Gather the bells and ornaments you want to use. Thread your ribbon through the top loop of one and tie it to secure it.
- Measure how long you would like the bell to hang from the floral wire, cut, and tie it to the wire.
- Repeat until you have all your desired bells and ornaments on.
- Next, wrap a ribbon around the floral wire and tie it into a bow.
- Wipe the area on the wall with rubbing alcohol and mark where you would like to hang your swag wreath.
- Now, get ready to attach a Command™ Large Brushed Nickel Hook. Remove the red liner and press onto the back of the hook.
- Remove the black liner and press the hook onto the wall firmly for 10 seconds. To reinforce, temporarily remove the hook from the wall. Slide the hook up and off base, and press the base for 30 seconds. Slide the hook back on. Wait 1 hour for the adhesive to build.
- Carefully hang your swag wreath on the hook by threading it through the floral wire.
“Every holiday season, I bust out my bag of Command™ Hooks and Strips. They’re great for renters like me, because you can hang decor without having to worry about patching your walls later.”

Sarah’s swag wreath is the perfect pop of holiday charm — and of red — in her small home office. “It adds a cozy, festive vibe to this area where I sit and work almost every day,” she says. “I never think to decorate with bells, and I really like how they look here, especially the star-shaped ones.” The Command™ Brushed Nickel Hook complements the metallic ornaments beautifully and makes removal easy after the holidays.
