Few things say nostalgia to me like a good ol’ peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When I was a kid, my mom kept to the same few jars of smooth peanut butter that my family loved. As an adult, I love to experiment with other brands and varieties.

I’m a big fan of Big Spoon Roasters’ nut butters. (Its lemon cookie cashew butter tastes like pure sunshine.) So much so I recently signed up for the brand’s PB&J of the Month subscription. After trying the first box, I can honestly say my inner child has never been more delighted.

My Honest Review of Big Spoon Roasters’ PB&J of the Month

I’ve tried, and enjoyed, a few of Big Spoon Roasters’ limited-edition nut butters, so I was excited to sample some of the classic flavors. My subscription box came with Peanut Butter with Wildflower Honey and American Spoon’s Red Raspberry Preserves.

The peanut butter is on another level. It’s made from just four ingredients: high-oleic runner peanuts, raw organic honey, Jacobsen sea salt (side note: LOVE the salts from this brand), and organic virgin coconut oil. Combined, they all make the roasty, toasty peanut flavor sing.

It strikes the perfect balance between salty and sweet, not leaning too much one way so I can use it for a myriad of things, like classic peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or peanut sauce. Plus, it has little bits of peanuts in it. As a big-time crunchy peanut butter person, this is my ideal situation.

I have to give the jam its shine, too, which contains red raspberries, sugar, and lemon juice. That’s it. It tastes so fresh, like someone you love made it for you. It’s sweet with sharp tartness from the berries that really pops from a little bit of acid.

Both the jam and the peanut butter are so good on their own, and between two slices of bread. (Even Ina Garten would approve.) They’re even better when swirled into boxed brownie mix batter before baking in the oven for 35 minutes.

Oh man, these were some of the best brownies I can ever recall making. The peanut butter added some decadence as well as texture, thanks to the crushed peanuts, while the jam brought beautiful brightness. Forget PB&J sandwiches; PB&J brownies now have an official spot in my lunch box.
