When I was little, my go-to breakfast was an Eggo waffle. I would always look forward to my mom popping one in the toaster, smearing on a little butter, and wrapping it in a paper towel for me to eat in the car on the way to school. I don’t eat nearly as many waffles for breakfast these days (brunch is another story!), but that may change.

What You Should Know About Eggo Protein Buttermilk Vanilla Waffles

In May 2024, Eggo debuted its protein waffles with two dessert-inspired flavors: Chocolate Chip Brownie and Strawberry Delight. The launch was so successful that the brand decided to expand the permanent protein line with a classic Buttermilk Vanilla flavor — just in time for back-to-school season.

If you’re looking for convenient ways to consume protein, you should know that one serving (aka two waffles) has 10 grams (or 20% of the recommended daily value). The waffles contain soy and whey protein, as well as enriched flour, sugar, vegetable oil, buttermilk, leavening, salt, and eggs.

My Honest Review of Eggo Protein Buttermilk Vanilla Waffles

To evoke those childhood memories, I popped a couple of waffles in my toaster oven straight from the freezer and waited a few minutes for them to get toasty and golden-brown. Visually they looked just like the classic Eggo waffles I grew up eating — if anything, maybe a tiny bit less yellow than I remember.

I typically don’t eat my waffles plain and dry (who does?), but wanted to try a bite on its own first to see what we were working with. Straight off the bat, I could taste the vanilla. The waffle has a sweet flavor that’s reminiscent of a boxed cake mix. It’s not powdery, chalky, or gritty at all (which has been the case with other protein products I’ve tried).

The waffle crisped up nicely, just as the OG, with crisp edges yet a still soft and fluffy interior. I served it up with some of my favorite butter and maple syrup for a delicious and quick breakfast.

I honestly couldn’t tell it had additional protein from the taste alone, nor do I think kids would be able to. If anything, I wish there was maybe a hint more salt in the recipe to round out the flavors, as it skews a bit sweet. Overall, I’d happily have one again. Little Alex would have definitely been a fan, too.
