Olive trees may just be the perfect seasonless plant to style with because they look just as chic and summery in the warmer months as they do cozy and autumnal when the weather cools. And right now, you can score mini olive trees at Trader Joe’s just in time for your fall decor refresh. By the time summer rolls around, you’ll have a potted tree that’s ready for the patio.
“Mini olive trees are baaaaaack!” Jess Stassi from Cozy On Clayton on Instagram wrote in a recent caption. Stassi placed the olive trees in a patinated vintage ceramic water vessel and displayed it on her kitchen counter. Paired with a few wooden cutting boards and brass salt and pepper mills, this is rustic fall styling in a nutshell! Plus, the sage hue of the olive leaves is just the perfect autumnal green.
Olive trees hit the Trader Joe’s plant section a few times per year. They were most recently spotted back in April, and shoppers were loving that they could bring a Mediterranean vibe into their homes for just $11. And according to one Reddit user who bought one of these mini trees several years ago, you can actually get olives from them if you plant your trees outside!
“Was probably 6”-10” tall at that time,” they wrote. “Now it’s probably close to 10 feet and finally producing olives. Going to cure them and see how they turn out.” Of course, your climate needs to be mild for olive trees to grow outside — this Reddit user, for example, is located in Southern California.
How to Care for Olive Trees
You can continue to repot your olive trees in larger vessels as they grow throughout the years. Place them outside in the summer and bring them in come winter to keep them happy and healthy. You might end up with olives depending on how big a pot you eventually upgrade to! They like dry air, bright sunlight, and water only when their soil is thoroughly dry.
If your Trader Joe’s happens to be out of stock, don’t fret. You can grab an olive tree from The Sill. They’re being offered at a discounted price and come in a variety of sizes. The Sill is also selling beautiful planters to go with your new tree.
So the next time you stop into Trader Joe’s, pick up one of these mini olive plants to add to your collection. They look just as great with fall accessories as they do with your summertime Mediterranean aesthetic!
