Can I make a confession? Until very recently, I stored my random assortment of knives in one of those quart-sized plastic containers you get from the deli. Oh, and it gets worse! I have extremely limited counter space, so that container had to live right next to the stove — so close that the nearest burner seared a hole into it. (Oops!)

I’ve since repented and bought a $40 rotating magnetic knife block, preserving the edges that my knife sharpener worked so hard to restore. It’ll hold me over until I can get what I really want, aside from a bigger kitchen: a beautiful knife block full of matching blades that are ready to tackle every chop, dice, and slice. If I had the space right now, I’d pick up the Astercook 14-Piece Knife Set from Walmart’s early Black Friday sale. Originally $300, it’s now just $43 (yes, really), making my knifeless knife block purchase kind of a raw deal.

Astercook 14-Piece Knife Set at Walmart

What Is the Astercook 14-Piece Knife Set?

An 8-inch chef’s knife, an 8-inch slicing knife, a 7-inch santoku knife, an 8-inch serrated bread knife, a 5-inch utility knife, and a 3.5-inch paring knife are the stars of the show here. Six steak knives, kitchen shears, and the block itself, enabled with a built-in knife sharpener, round out the rest of the Astercook set. All the knives are full tang, which means each stainless steel blade runs through the ergonomic handle all the way to the base. (Read: They’re strong and sturdy.) And since they’re dishwasher-safe, they’re as easy to clean as they are to chop with.

Knife blocks are a slam-dunk gift for college graduates, newlyweds, and first-time homebuyers, not to mention any of your friends and family who don’t yet have proper knife collections — ahem, hello, it’s me. My recommendation? At the next Friendsgiving you attend, peek in the kitchen and see what kind of knives the host is working with, and consider bringing over the Astercook knife set instead of a bottle of wine next time.
