If there’s one signifier that spring is officially upon us, it’s the smell of fresh flowers popping up again. Whether I’m picking flowers from my yard or adding them to my grocery cart, I’ve always struggled with arranging them in a way that showcases their beauty to the fullest.
All of that changed, however, when I spotted a handy little trick from our friends at Apartment Therapy — and my at-home floral arrangements got a major glow-up. The best part? All you need is one of those mesh bags that citrus and avocados are packaged in at the grocery store.

How to Use a Mesh Citrus Bag to Create Stunning Floral Arrangements
Just in time for spring and Easter, I’ve officially mastered the art of a perfect floral arrangement with minimal effort. Here’s how it works: Grab a Mason jar, remove the insert for the lid, and cut a piece of your discarded mesh produce bag to fit the opening. Stretch the mesh across the opening, then screw the lid’s rim on to secure the mesh in place. Voila! You’ve got a hidden grid (or DIY flower frog) to help you arrange your flowers beautifully — and without frustration.
I tried this easy hack on a bunch of roses my husband bought me for our anniversary, and it couldn’t have been easier. I was so delighted by the result! Instead of a bunch of flowers haphazardly leaning this way and that, they are perfectly arranged and actually stay upright. Plus, the mesh is basically invisible — especially with lots of foliage.

Although I used a pint-sized wide-mouth jar this time, I am definitely going to do this again using a quart-sized jar and a larger bouquet. It occurred to me that if I were having a spring or summer barbecue, or even a low-key outdoor wedding, these Mason jar arrangements would make adorable, affordable centerpieces.

Not only is this trick easy, but it also gives a second life to those mesh bags that would otherwise end up in the trash. Affordable, foolproof, and sustainable — seriously, what’s not to love? If you’re as excited about the arrival of spring — and bright flowers blooming — as I am, now is the perfect time to put this ingenious idea to the test. Who knows, you might even stumble upon a newfound hobby.
