If you have any ground beef in your refrigerator or freezer, you’ll want to check it ASAP. A massive recall has just been issued in states across the country due to possible contamination from small pieces of metal found in ground beef.

What ground beef was recalled?

The recall of over 1,000 pounds of ground beef was issued by Ada Valley Meat Company, the company that produced the potentially contaminated meat, once it was discovered that pieces of metal could possibly be present in the meat. A customer reported that they found pieces of metal in the product, the company was notified, and immediately issued the food recall.

The recalled beef was distributed throughout California, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. But, even if you live in these states and you’ve recently purchased ground beef at your local grocery store, chances are you don’t need to worry. The recall is for 5-pound bags of frozen, ready-to-eat ground beef that is typically sold in commercial settings.

The recalled bags were packed between May 28 and May 30, and they were distributed in 20-pound cardboard box cases that each contained four five-pound bags.  The lot codes on the impacted meat are 35156 or 35157, and recalled products also contain the establishment number EST. 10031.

What should you do if you have purchased the recalled ground beef?

To date, there have been no confirmed reports of any health issues or injuries related to the possibly contaminated meat, but the recall is important to abide by just the same. If you do happen to have any of the meat included in the recall in your possession, don’t eat it.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued an announcement about the recall. “FSIS is concerned that some products may be in institutional freezers. Institutions who have purchased these products are urged not to serve these products,” it said. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
