I’m an avid baker, and my favorite dessert to bake is cake. It’s a great and easy way to show love to my family and friends for their birthdays, plus I get to enjoy the end result too. But one issue that I always run into is how to transport it. I don’t want all my hard work spent decorating it to go to waste! (Transporting a cake on the subway is no easy feat.)
Sure, you can get a cake carrier, but there are times when you don’t have one on hand or it might be easier to transport the dessert in the tin you baked it in. I figured that there’s got to be a better option than precariously holding it and hoping for the best. Then I found this hack, and was shocked to find that the solution is super easy — and already lying in my bathroom cabinet.
Instagram user @enticestudio recently shared his “genius” solution for saving a cake topping: cotton swabs. Once you’re finished decorating your cake, all you need to do is grab some cotton swabs, and cut the tips off of one end so you have a solid base. Simply stick them into your cake all over with the side that still has cotton tip on it facing up. Be sure that the cotton swab is sticking far out enough above the layer of frosting, at least a half inch or more. Then, take plastic wrap and gently drape it over the cake, letting it rest on the cotton swab. And voila! None of your cake topping will be ruined, nor will you lose half of the frosting that might have gotten stuck once you unveiled it.
You could also try this hack with toothpicks, but be sure to choose ones that have a flat, rounded edge so they won’t pierce through the plastic wrap. I know I’ll definitely be trying this hack the next time I need to bring a cake to the party. You can even use the holes from the cotton swabs as a guide on where to put the candles.
