I like to think of myself as a little bit of a cake mix connoisseur. I’ve tried Dolly Parton’s cake mix, Cravings by Chrissy Teigen’s Coconut Key Lime cake mix, and, although not from a box, I’ve also tried Taylor Swift’s favorite birthday cake from Milk Bar. All of that is to say that I know a thing or two about cake. So when I heard that Cravings by Chrissy Teigen was selling an Old-School Vanilla cake mix, I knew I had to try it. I went off in search of a box, and was excited to give it a try.
My Honest Review of Chrissy Teigen’s Old-School Vanilla Cake Mix
Once I had my cake mix in hand, I couldn’t wait to get baking. First I preheated the oven to 350°F, following the directions on the box, and broke out the additional ingredients the recipe calls for: milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and an egg yolk. The box said to bake the cake in a 9” x 13” pan, and I sprayed mine with avocado oil so it wouldn’t stick.

I mixed all of the ingredients in a bowl and used a whisk to stir. The ingredients combined easily in about a minute when I stirred them by hand. The smell of the vanilla was slight, but when I tasted the batter (I know, it has raw eggs in it but I couldn’t help myself) it was just the right amount of sweet vanilla flavor. If the cake tasted as good baked, it was going to be really good.
I poured the batter into the pan, then set the timer. The box says to bake the cake for 25 to 30 minutes, so I decided to bake it for 28 minutes, which turned out to be the perfect amount of time. When I pulled the cake out of the oven it was cooked through and perfectly golden on top. I allowed it to cool for a few minutes before popping it out of the pan. It came out easily, and then I let it cool fully on a wire rack before icing it.

The cake comes with a mix to make your own chocolate icing, which is likely just as delicious as the cake. However, I was in the mood for cream cheese icing, so I used some that I bought at the store instead. It only took a few minutes to ice the cake, and then it was ready to eat.
At long last, I cut the cake and I couldn’t wait to dig in. It was so good. It was baked to perfection — the interior was just right. I had to work really hard to resist going back for seconds and thirds.
Well, Cravings by Chrissy Teigen has done it again. The Old-School Vanilla cake mix might be the best vanilla cake mix I’ve ever tried, and I’ve tried quite a few cakes in my day. Thanks, Chrissy Teigen! Now, please excuse me while I go enjoy another slice.
