In my household, we use a lot of butter during mealtimes and for cooking. We slather it on our dinner rolls, our biscuits melt pats of it, and my husband always adds a touch of melted butter to his special smoked wing sauce recipe. I suppose I inherited this trait of serving butter in a cute dish from my grandmother, who always had a stick on a tray tucked into the top shelf of her refrigerator door. My serving method has come a long way ever since.

My own family often enjoys room-temperature butter, and yes, we are leave-it-out-on-the-counter people. We like it super soft and ready for spreading. For this reason, I almost always have a butter dish on my kitchen countertop, but finding the right butter dish has been a trial and a comedy of errors.

How I Used to Store Butter in My Kitchen

Over the years, I’ve tried several different butter dishes. Take, for example, the Butterie Flip-Top Butter Container, which seemed like a splendid idea for a butter container when I received it as a gift from my mom (she knows how much we love butter!). A spreader even accompanied it, but the whole setup eventually became disappointing (sorry, Mom, I did try it). It took up too much valuable real estate on my countertop, and it was an awkward shape that didn’t fit in the dishwasher easily. As much as I wanted it to work, it just didn’t.

So I decided to try a butter crock similar to this Priority Chef French Butter Crock. At first glance, I thought this French-style butter crock was gorgeous, and with so many colors to choose from, it would fit any decor. But I began resenting this one, too.

Alas, my dreams of French countryside butter bliss died in the Alabama heat when the butter would too easily slide down into the water. When I resorted to just popping a stick in and leaving it upside down, rather than smashing it down into the crock, I realized it was time to move on. I began my search for a butter dish yet again. After all, butter should be effortlessly enjoyed.

Finally, I Found the Best Butter Dish

I thought back to my grandmother’s butter setup and process. It was simple and functional. She mainly used a white plastic butter dish, but for special occasions, she would bring out her special crystal glass one. So I searched for one and found a similar style. It even comes with a lid!

Now, I use the Crystal Glass Butter Dish every day in my kitchen. It sits neatly atop my countertop right next to my stove. Although the design is simple, the clear glass lends to the elevated style, and I can always spy when my husband has snagged an entire stick for his wing sauce. It’s also super easy to clean; I just place it in the dishwasher for a cycle when needed.

It’s about 7x3x2 inches, the perfect size for fitting in my fridge if need be, or letting it take up minimal counter space. The best part? It’s astonishingly affordable at just $9.99 on Amazon.

Finally, I found a butter dish that I love. Sometimes the simplest things bring the most joy, and I can unequivocally say that my tried-and-true glass butter dish might be one of the easiest ways I’ve brought a little more enjoyment to my cooking (and my taste buds!).
