I love seafood, but I don’t often cook it at home — mostly because it’s hard to find high-quality fish at affordable prices. Don’t get me wrong. Plenty of great seafood is shipped into the city, but it’s usually reserved for gourmet restaurants and high-end grocery stores (places I’d rather not spend my entire grocery budget).

On the off chance I do score a really good piece of, say, salmon on sale, I don’t always feel like taking the steps (or brainpower) to prep it and then cook after work. Which brings me to Wild Alaskan Company. The popular seafood subscription service just launched several prepared types of fish — Salmon! Halibut! Pollock! And more! — that answer both of my seafood woes. Here’s what you need to know.

Wild Alaskan Company just added five new prepared fish that come marinated, seasoned, and even topped with a delicious compound butter. Like the other seafood options, they are shipped fully frozen and thawed before cooking in the fridge for at least 10 hours. (The company recommends cutting holes in the package or removing the fish entirely before thawing.)

My Honest Review of the Wild Alaskan Company Marinated & Seasoned Collection

I’ve tried Wild Alaskan Company’s salmon and halibut before, and the new heat-and-eat offerings are just as good — if not better (Bonus points for saving time!). In fact, I plan on keeping them on my roster for quick, but delicious dinners.

Once the box arrived, I immediately put all five into the freezer and, as the directions state, the night before I wanted to eat the Sablefish with Miso Marinade, I put it in the fridge, whole, to thaw. The next night, I broiled it in my oven for just 10 minutes and, violà, dinner. Simple, right? But I was most impressed by the taste.

The fish was tender and flaky, and the seasoning was full of savory umami with a touch of sweetness that was a dream paired with rice. (I ate the second filet the next day for lunch).

Everything else was equally as exciting: A friend came over for a last-minute dinner, so I prepared the Sockeye Salmon with Teriyaki Glaze and Barbecue Sockeye Salmon for us to share, and cooked them together in the oven for 12 minutes at 425°F. Like the sablefish, they tasted so fresh — like I had just picked it up from a fancy seafood restaurant. A revelation!

The Pacific Halibut was also a standout, and I’ll be dreaming about the generous amount of lemon and herb butter that it came with for a few more weeks (until I get my next box). I poured some over noodles for a gratifying two-ingredient dinner.
