A few weeks ago, I attended the Fancy Food Show, a convention where food brands from all over the world showcase their latest products, at the Javits Center in New York City. With thousands (yes, thousands) of booths and an endless array of new and exciting brands offering samples of their products, it was impossible to get to everything. (I tried my best!) One of the many products I did get to taste — Cravers Cacao Hazelnut Spread — left a lasting impression.

As a self-described nut butter connoisseur, I’ve tried several different kinds of nut butters before and have racked up a few favorites (Carrot Cake Almond Butter and Lemon Cookie Cashew Butter, to name two). As long as it’s packed with flavor and made with recognizable ingredients, I’m in. After not even one spoonful, I knew that this spread would certainly be making the list. Here’s why.

What You Should Know About Cravers Cacao Hazelnut Spread

Despite its trendy packaging, Cravers is rooted in tradition. The brand specializes in hazelnut products, including a line of spreads and snack balls, and they make sure the ingredients shine. The company sources its ingredients from Northern Anatolia, Turkey, where hazelnuts are plentiful (70% of the world’s supply comes from Turkey!) and have been grown for more than 2,000 years.

Wanting to celebrate the nut that’s typically seen as a byproduct of the chocolate industry, Cravers directly partners with local farmers that have been there for generations to showcase their premium Tombul hazelnuts.

Its Cacao Hazelnut Spread is made with just three ingredients: roasted hazelnuts (80%), date puree (17%), and cacao powder (3%). There’s no added sugar in the vegan spread, and it’s non-GMO, gluten-, palm oil-, and plastic-free. (It’s packaged in a glass jar with a metal lid.)

My Honest Review of Cravers Cacao Hazelnut Spread

Cravers prides itself on letting the hazelnuts shine, and that was clear from the first spoonful. The hazelnuts really steal the show. The deep, chocolate notes from the cacao and subtle sweetness from the dates balance everything out. The texture is also smooth and runny (similar to a natural peanut butter), making it the perfect drizzling consistency.

Unlike other spreads, sugar isn’t the first thing you taste nor does it feel like you can only have a tiny bit and then be done with it. As a dark chocolate stan, I love the bitter notes of this spread and how balanced the flavor is. It’s absolutely delicious drizzled over yogurt, oatmeal, or a smoothie bowl, smeared on toast, sandwiched in a crepe, or simply eaten by the spoonful.
