This “So Fudgy” $4 Boxed Brownie Mix Is the Chocolate Dessert of My Dreams (It Tastes Better Than Homemade)

There are few moments more heavenly than enjoying a batch of brownies fresh out of the oven. That moment is made more sweet when the brownies taste homemade (or, dare I say, even better), but take next to no time to make. That’s exactly what I (and 11 other testers) set out to find earlier this spring. Our team sat down to taste our way through seven of the most popular boxed brownie mixes available on shelves. (Tough job, I know!)

Bob’s Red Mill Fudgy Brownie Baking Mix isn’t just a great boxed (well, bagged) brownie mix — it is a dreamy way to finish any meal, whether that’s on a random weeknight or an extra-special holiday. (In fact, it landed a spot on The Kitchn’s Groceries Essentials list this year!) The brownies beat out the other boxes in this taste test, which was stacked with a few well-known favorites. 

Some of the tasters (and a handful of editors who didn’t take part in the taste test) were shocked to learn that this under-the-radar bag bested some pretty well-known brands. A few even mistook it for a beloved staple — that’s how good these brownies are.

I couldn’t get enough of the beautiful “glistening top,” while Mara, our director of groceries, noted that its “deeply chocolaty flavor and fudgy texture” was unmatched. (After the test was over, and the votes were tallied, she nabbed an extra bag to bring home.) Since the taste test, I like to keep a few bags in my pantry at all times for hosting and, you know, other brownie emergencies.
