Since I’ve tried Oprah’s famous deviled egg recipe, I’ve been obsessed with making them as a quick and easy appetizer for all my parties. They’re creamy, sweet, tangy, and have a hint of spice, and I didn’t think they could get better. That is until I came across an Instagram clip with the cutest idea of how to decorate them with a holiday twist.

Dan Whalen, the founder of the blog The Food in My Beard, recently posted a hack that goes against traditions. In the video, which has gained nearly 16K views to date, Whalen demonstrates how to create Christmas tree-shaped deviled eggs.

The hack involves pipping the creamy yolk filling into egg halves and decorating it with ingredients to mimic a Christmas tree. Besides a piping bag with a French star tip, you don’t need any special tools to make this festive delight.

To create deviled egg Christmas trees, start by hard-boiling a few eggs. Next, cut the peeled boiled eggs half crosswise “to make it look like a planter for the Christmas Tree,” Whalen says. Then, create the filling by scooping out the cooked egg yolks and tossing those in a blender with sautéed spinach, mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, paprika, hot sauce, and potato flakes. “The true secret here is the potato flakes; they’re going to give the filling enough body to stand up as high as a Christmas tree,” he says. Next, pipe the filling onto the egg halves — bobbing up and down — to create a treelike shape. Lastly, cut a red and yellow bell pepper into the ornaments to decorate your devilled egg Christmas tree, and finish it by grating Parmesan on top to mimic snow.

If you’d like, you can use green food coloring instead of spinach to turn this filling green. Additionally, you can decorate these deviled egg Christmas trees with ingredients like crumbled bacon or red onions.

People are obsessed with how easy and fun this festive hack is. One fan commented on Whalen’s Instagram clip detailing how to make these deviled egg Christmas trees, saying, “I’m definitely going to make these!” while another user mentioned that they “love this idea so much!”

If you’ve been searching for quick and easy recipes for the holiday season, save this one. If you can’t get enough of this hack, try it with other recipes, like piping out Christmas tree mashed potatoes or frosting a cake.
