In the middle of a hectic school day, there is something so comforting about opening a hot, homemade lunch. It’s like a warm hug (but not in a way that’s going to embarrass a kid in front of their peers). My two kids pack their lunches almost every day, and both of them love having a container full of chicken noodle soup (or, in my 13-year-old’s case, reheated leftovers from the night before). Over the years we’ve tried (and loved, and lost) a bunch of insulated food jars, from the cute, kid-friendly Thermos FUNtainer to the heavy-duty YETI Rambler.
For my kids, a great insulated container is one that keeps hot food hot and cold food cold, at least until lunchtime, and under no circumstances leaks into a backpack full of schoolwork. The best ones are easy to clean (hello, dishwasher) and simple to use. These are our top picks.
